Impacted Wisdom Teeth

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Third molars are commonly referred to as wisdom teeth. They are usually the last teeth to develop and are located in the back of your mouth, behind your second molars. Their development is usually completed between the middle teenage years and early twenties, a time traditionally associated with the onset of maturity and the attainment of wisdom.

What Is An Impacted Tooth?

Although most people develop and grow 32 permanent adult teeth, many times their jaws are too small to accommodate the four wisdom teeth. When inadequate space prevents the teeth from erupting they are called impacted. This indicates their inability to erupt into the proper position for chewing and cleaning.

Types Of Impactions

We will need to see you for a consultation to determine if you will benefit from wisdom tooth removal. A special x-ray of your mouth and jaws (panorex) will be taken to determine if your wisdom teeth are impacted, if there is room for them to erupt, and how difficult it will be to have them removed.

  • Soft Tissue Impaction: There is not enough room to allow the gum tissue to retract for adequate cleaning of the tooth.
  • Partial Bony Impaction: There is enough space to allow the wisdom tooth to partially erupt. However, the tooth cannot function properly in the chewing process, and creates cleaning problems, among others.
  • Complete Bony Impaction: There is NO space for the tooth to erupt. It remains embedded in the jaw bone or if even partially visible requires complex surgical techniques for removal. The impacted wisdom tooth may also be in an unusual position and difficult to remove. This situation can also arise when the shape or size of the jaw bone and other facial structures make removal of this tooth significantly more complex.

Like any parent I was nervous about my son's surgery to remove wisdom teeth, but the staff and Dr. Fuentes made us feel very comfortable. The office is immaculate and the staff made you feel at home. Dr. Fuentes greeted us personally and took time to explain everything before the surgery. We actually drove down from Ft. Worth after hearing other patient testimonials. We are happy we did! Dr. Fuentes ensured my son would be comfortable on the trip home and explained in detail how to keep his pain under control as we were returning home after the procedure. My son recovered quickly and was actually able to return to baseball within 3 days with absolutely NO complications. Dr. Fuentes is genuinely interested in his patients and has an excellent "bedside" manner. He is approachable, knowledgeable, and highly skilled. I would highly recommend Dr. Fuentes!

Dr. Fuentes and his staff are the best! I have 3 kids who have had their wisdom teeth taken out. My older two had them taken out by another oral surgeon in the area and my youngest child had them done with Dr. Fuentes. The difference in the care shown to our family was night and day. Dr. Fuentes and his team are the best in the business. The office was SUPER easy to work with. The surgery went well and the recovery for my youngest was so easy compared to the older ones who went to a different doctor. I now feel bad that my older two didn't see Dr. Fuentes. If you are looking for a doctor that is great at what he does and you can tell truly cares then you should go to Spring Cypress Oral Surgery.

Took my daughter to see Dr. Fuentes to get a consultation about having her wisdom teeth removed. The office is great and the staff are some of the best I have ever come across. They are all very friendly and professional. Dr. Fuentes is the most impressive doctor I have come across in my 46 years! Not only did he take the time to go over the procedure and answer all of our questions but he took the time to get to know us as people (most doctors never do that). He treated us like we were long time friends! My daughter is scheduled to have her wisdom teeth removed in 2 weeks and I am glad she was referred here!
